CBD is the shortened name for cannabidiol D, a compound found naturally in the cannabis plant (Cannabis Sativa and Cannabis indica). There is ongoing research into the fascinating compound, and there is early evidence that it may enhance both the physical and mental health of humans. But CBD comes in so many formats. We dive into how to take CBD effectively.
You may have read what CBD can do for you. In particular, CBD may help to:
- Enhance sleep
- Reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression
- Relieve pain
- Boost cognitive function
- Protect neurons in the brain
- Lower blood pressure and improve heart health
- Reduce the severity of acne and eczema
Most commonly, people take CBD oil to gain the health benefits of the plant but there are many ways to take CBD in the UK. In this article, you’ll learn what CBD is, the three main types of CBD, how you can take CBD, and the best practice for doing so.
What is CBD?
Before we delve into how you can take CBD, it’s important to know what CBD is.
CBD is one of over 100 different phytocompounds in the cannabis (marijuana) plant. It has no psychoactive effects, unlike tetrahydrocannabidiol (THC), which is another compound from the marijuana plant that is responsible for making people ‘high’. So, whether you take CBD oil, CBD gummies, or CBD cream, you’re not going to get high!
This is one of the main reasons that many people enjoy CBD. You can gain the health benefits of the marijuana plant without experiencing the negative side effects of THC. Research suggests that CBD may actually counteract the undesirable effects of THC usage, such as increased anxiety and paranoia.
The Three Types of CBD
There are three main forms of CBD that you can get – CBD isolate, full-spectrum CBD, and broad-spectrum CBD. Although each is from the same parts of the cannabis plant, they each vary in their composition.
CBD isolate has zero THC and it also contains no other cannabinoids. It is the purest form of CBD oil that you can. This is unlike full spectrum CBD that contains CBD as well as a number of other plant compounds, including up to 0.3% THC and a variety of cannabinoids. Broad-spectrum CBD also contains additional cannabinoids but, as with isolate CBD extracts, it contains zero THC.
Generally, CBD isolate is more processed and does not contain any of the other natural plant compounds from the cannabis plant. Research suggests that the benefits of CBD may increase when the user takes it with small amounts of THC (known as the “entourage effect”). This indicates that it might be better to take a full-spectrum CBD over a broad-spectrum or CBD isolate.
How to Take CBD Effectively
You can take CBD in several different ways, all of which will help you to gain the physical and mental health benefits of the compound.
There are so many products containing CBD in the UK. From the CBD oil to the CBD gummies to the CBD vapes, it can be hard knowing which ones to get. You’re spoilt for choice!
Depending on your preferences, one method might be better for you than another. Each method has its advantages and its disadvantages. Try out each of these different ways to take CBD and see which ones give you the best results.
CBD Oil Tinctures
CBD oil tinctures are one of the most common ways that people take CBD in the UK, so let’s start here.
A hemp lab extracts CBD from the plant and dilutes it down using a carrier oil, which is usually coconut oil or hempseed oil. Then, the lab pours the golden oil into darkened bottles (usually a 30 ml bottle). The final product is a tincture, and often has a glass dropper for dosing.
CBD oil comes in a variety of concentrations. The CBD brand or lab simply adds more or less of the CBD extract to the carrier oil. Different concentrations provide different dosages! The stronger the dose, the more powerful the effects will be.
Dosages can get confusing when you’re trying to buy CBD oil. Some companies that sell CBD in the UK will list their products according to the concentrations. Others will list according to the dose of their products. If you’re not sure how to figure out the right dosage to suit your needs, use this online dosage calculator to make things easier.
Commonly, you can buy CBD oil in concentrations of 300 mg, 600 mg, 1000 mg, and 3000 mg or dosages of anywhere between 5 mg to 25 mg.
Place a couple of drops of CBD oil under your tongue. Then, the CBD can pass into your bloodstream more quickly. Alternatively, you can ingest CBD oil by adding a couple of drops to your food.
CBD topicals go directly onto the skin. You can get CBD muscle balms, creams, lotions, and transdermal patches, all with CBD in them. The CBD absorbs through your skin and enters the bloodstream where it can then exert its effects.
CBD cream and other topicals are beneficial for a variety of skin conditions in a natural way. For example, rub these products directly onto patches of acne or psoriasis to reduce inflammation in the area. One study also showed that topical CBD cream helped to reduce joint swelling in rats.
Topicals are an effective method of taking CBD because they avoid the first pass effect. The first pass phenomenon describes the partial metabolism of an ingested substance by the liver before it reached the bloodstream.
When you apply CBD cream directly to the skin, it enters your body without having to pass through the digestion system and the liver, meaning its effects will be stronger.
With that said, the skin’s ability to absorb products is not amazing. Therefore, you’ll have to apply a lot of the topical CBD product to feel the effects.
One of the most popular ways to take CBD is through CBD gummies. They taste pretty much like normal sweets, but they contain small amounts of CBD. They come in a range of flavours and dosages.
Usually, the dosage is quite low in CBD gummies, making them perfect for CBD beginners who are a little apprehensive to try CBD oil or CBD vapes.
As with CBD capsules and tablets, the rules around CBD gummies are not as strict as they probably should be. Although there are currently no FDA-approved edible CBD products, that doesn’t mean there aren’t some great, high-quality CBD gummies available.
CBD Capsules and CBD Tablets
You can also ingest CBD in the form of CBD capsules or CBD tablets, where a small amount of concentrated CBD is placed inside a shell or coating.
CBD capsules and tablets are easy to swallow and enable you to take a consistent amount of CBD oil every day. The pre-measured dose will be specified on the packet.
The downside to CBD tablets or capsules is that they are subjected to first pass metabolism. When ingested, they are broken down by the digestive tract, which decreases their potency. This means you may need to take a higher dosage to experience the positive CBD effects.
Neither CBD capsules nor CBD tablets are as closely regulated as some of the other CBD UK products. Some companies might have inaccurate claims about how much CBD is actually in their products.
But don’t worry! Here at GreenBox, we make sure every one of our CBD products is labelled correctly so you know exactly what you’re getting!
A CBD vape contains a small cartridge that is filled with CBD oil. When this oil is heated, it turns into a vapor that can be inhaled into your lungs.
As with topical application, vaping or smoking CBD skips the first pass effect. The CBD enters the bloodstream directly via the lungs. Within 5-10 minutes of using a CBD vape, you can absorb up to 56% of the CBD. This provides a much higher bioavailability than some of the other methods of taking CBD.
For obvious reasons, vaping or smoking cannabis-based products is not appropriate for everyone. It may expose you to some carcinogens due to heating up the plant’s compounds to just below the point of combustion. Always seek medical advice if you’re looking to use CBD vapes.
With all of the amazing ways to take CBD, there’s bound to be one or two methods that are perfect for you. If you’re new try trying out CBD, starting off with some CBD cream, CBD gummies, or CBD tablets might be a good idea. Then, if you find these beneficial, you might want to progress into using CBD oil or CBD vapes
