What is CBD Distillate

What Is CBD Distillate? How Is It Different from CBD Isolate?

CBD distillate is a refined CBD extract with high CBD (cannabidiol) content — around 75-90%.

It’s typically used to make various CBD products, like broad spectrum oils.

Read on to get some more insights into what it is, how it’s made, how to use it, and the main benefits of CBD distillate.

What Is CBD Distillate?

CBD distillate is one of the purest forms of CBD (after CBD isolate, which is 100% pure CBD extract.)

It’s produced by distilling CBD extract and contains cannabinoids, terpenes, plant oils and extracts.

Some of its characteristics include:

  • It doesn’t have any smell or taste
  • Its colour can be yellow, brown, or orange
  • Its consistency is thick like honey

What’s more?

Since distillate CBD contains other plant-based compounds, it may be more beneficial than CBD isolate.

This is because the hemp plant’s cannabinoids and terpenes work better together (aka the entourage effect), amplifying each other’s effects.

Note: CBD distillate-based products made in Europe and the UK do not contain THC (tetrahydrocannabinol is the cannabinoid compound with psychoactive effects.)

But a US-made distillate CBD might have up to 0.3% THC content (in the US, 0.3% THC levels are legally permitted in CBD products).

How Is CBD Distillate Made?

The CBD distillation process includes four stages:

  • CBD extraction process: Using CO2 or ethanol solvent, various cannabinoids and terpenes are extracted from the hemp plant.
  • Winterisation: The CBD concentrate is mixed with ethanol and left to chill for a few days. This way, all the impurities can solidify and be removed from the pure extract.
  • Decarboxylation: The decarboxylation process activates the cannabinoids and removes the extract’s leafy taste.
  • Final distillation: The distillation helps remove any leftover impurities. This happens by heating and condensing the distillate in a vapour chamber.

Once the CBD concentrate is produced, it can be used to make full and broad spectrum CBD products or be further processed to create CBD isolate.

Wait, how does broad spectrum distillate differ from full spectrum CBD and CBD isolate?

Full Spectrum CBD vs Broad Spectrum CBD Distillate vs CBD Isolate

Here are the main differences between full spectrum CBD, broad spectrum CBD distillate, and CBD isolate:

Form of CBD Full Spectrum CBD  Broad Spectrum CBD Distillate CBD Isolate
CBD Percentage   55-70% 75-90% 99+%
Ingredients Terpenes, chlorophyll, lipids, fatty acids, cannabinoids (including THC, CBG, CBC, and CBN) High boiling point terpenes, cannabinoids, essential oils  CBD only
Doesn’t Contain Plant material THC, low boiling point terpenes, chlorophyll, plant solids Terpenes, plant solids, chlorophyll, lipids, fatty acids, other cannabinoids
Advantages Has the entourage effect Offers all full spectrum CBD benefits (minus THC)  Suitable for first-time users since it only contains pure CBD

3 Major Benefits of Using CBD Distillate

THC free CBD distillate-based products offer numerous benefits like:

  • Pain relief: Some studies show that CBD can reduce pain, including chronic pain, cancer pain, and headaches.
  • Stress reduction: You can use CBD-based products to alleviate anxiety, depression, stress, and PTSD symptoms.
  • Energy and focus boost: Since CBD can increase your serotonin levels, it can make you feel more energetic and focused.

In a nutshell:

CBD can help with overall relaxation and well-being, so you feel more grounded, calm, and energised.

Important: CBD distillate cannot make you feel high. In contrast, THC distillate can make you feel high since THC is the psychoactive compound in the cannabis plant.
